Applicant must comply with all State requirements for the License they are applying for.

Fill out the application completely and return it to the Wellfleet Police Department with the following:

    1. A check made payable to the Town of Wellfleet for $100.00, if applicant is over the age of 70 and renewing a Firearms Permit the fee is waived.
    2. For renewals a copy of your current permit. For first time applications a copy of certificate that you have passed an approved handgun safety course for class A&B, or a hunter’s safety course for class C Permits.
    3. All Photographs and finger prints will be done at the Police Station.
    4. After dropping off a completed application, you will be called for an appointment to have your photos and finger prints done.

Types of Firearms permits:

    1. Class A Permit: Applicant must be 21 years of age, license to carry firearm: Shall entitle the holder thereof to purchase, rent, lease, borrow, possess, and carry.

      Firearms, including large capacity firearms, and feeding devices and ammunition thereof, for all lawful purposes, subject to restrictions relative to the possession, use or carrying of firearms as the licensing authority deems proper. A large capacity weapon id defined as: any firearm, rifle or shotgun: that is semiautomatic with fixed large capacity feeding device, that is semiautomatic and capable of accepting, or readily modifiable to accept, any detachable large capacity feeding device, that employs a rotating cylinder capable of accepting more than ten rounds of ammunition in a rifle or firearm and more than five shotgun shells in the case of a shotgun or firearm, or that is an assault weapon. (MGL c. 140 s. 121)

    2. Class B Permit: Applicant must be 21 years of age, license to carry firearm: Shall entitle the holder thereof to purchase, rent, lease, borrow, possess and carry.

      Non-large capacity firearms and feeding devices and ammunition thereof, for all lawful purposes, subject to such restrictions relative to the possession, use or carrying of such firearm as the licensing authority deems proper. A class B license shall not entitle the holder thereof to carry or possess a loaded firearm in a concealed manner.

    3. Class C Permit: Firearms Identification Card: Shall entitle the holder thereof to purchase, rent, lease, borrow, possess and carry: All rifles and shotguns that do not come under the large capacity definition. Said permit is subject to such restrictions relative to use, as the licensing authority deems proper.

    4. Class D Permit: Firearms Identification Card: restricted (mace/pepper spray): Shall entitle the holder thereof to purchase, carry and possess mace and pepper spray subject to the restrictions as the licensing authority deems proper.

 

Gun Locks, while supplies last, are available free of charge at our station.

Massachusetts Law  Chapter 140 Section131L(a), requires that a gun which is not in use be "secured in a locked container or equipped with a tamper-resistant mechanical lock or other safety device, properly engaged so as to render such weapon inoperable by any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user."
